The Numerical Discourses 5.114
At Andhakavinda
At one time, the Bhagavā was dwelling among the Magadhans at Andhakavinda.
Then Venerable Ānanda approached the Bhagavā; having approached, he paid homage to the Bhagavā and sat down to one side. As Venerable Ānanda was sitting to one side, the Bhagavā said this to him:
“Those bhikkhus, Ānanda, who are new, recently gone forth, newly arrived in this dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayaṁ] — those bhikkhus, Ānanda, should be encouraged, settled, and established in five dhammas.
In which five?
‘Come, friends, be virtuous, dwell restrained with the restraint of the Pātimokkha, accomplished in conduct and resort, seeing danger in the slightest faults; having undertaken them, train in the training rules’ — thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in restraint by the Pātimokkha.
‘Come, friends, dwell with the doors guarded among the indriyas, with protective sati, with prudent sati, with the mind well protected, endowed with a mind guarded by sati’ — thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in restraint of the indriyas.
‘Come, friends, be of little speech, setting a limit to speech’ — thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in limiting speech.
‘Come, friends, be forest dwellers; resort to remote lodgings in forests and wildernesses’ — thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in bodily seclusion.
‘Come, friends, be of right view, endowed with right vision’ — thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in right vision.
Those bhikkhus, Ānanda, who are new, recently gone forth, newly arrived in this dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayaṁ] — those bhikkhus, Ānanda, should be encouraged, settled, and established in these five dhammas."
