Purification of Almsfood

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

Thus have I heard—

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.

at one time the Bhagavā was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels' feeding ground.

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

Then Venerable Sāriputta, in the evening, having emerged from retreat, went to the Bhagavā; having approached, he paid homage to the Bhagavā and sat to one side. As Venerable Sāriputta was sitting to one side, the Bhagavā said this to him:

“Vippasannāni kho te, sāriputta, indriyāni, parisuddho chavivaṇṇo pariyodāto.

“Your indriyas are clear, Sāriputta; the color of your skin is pure and bright.

Katamena kho tvaṁ, sāriputta, vihārena etarahi bahulaṁ viharasī”ti?

In what dwelling, Sāriputta, do you now dwell much?”

“Suññatāvihārena kho ahaṁ, bhante, etarahi bahulaṁ viharāmī”ti.

Bhante, I now dwell much in the dwelling of emptiness.”

“Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta.

Sādhu, sādhu, Sāriputta.

Mahāpurisavihārena kira tvaṁ, sāriputta, etarahi bahulaṁ viharasi.

Indeed, Sāriputta, you now dwell much in the dwelling of a great person.

Mahāpurisavihāro eso, sāriputta, yadidaṁ—

This, Sāriputta, is the dwelling of a great person, namely—

suññatā.

emptiness.

Tasmātiha, sāriputta, bhikkhu sace ākaṅkheyya:

Therefore, Sāriputta, if a bhikkhu should wish:

‘suññatāvihārena bahulaṁ vihareyyan’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

‘May I dwell much in the dwelling of emptiness,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi nu kho me tattha cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti?

‘On the road by which I entered the village for alms, in the place where I walked for alms, and on the road by which I returned from the village after alms, was there in me, there, regarding forms [rūpesu] cognizable by the eye, any desire, lust, hatred, delusion, or resistance of mind?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi me tattha cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘On the road by which I entered the village for alms, in the place where I walked for alms, and on the road by which I returned from the village after alms, there was in me, there, regarding forms [rūpesu] cognizable by the eye, desire, lust, hatred, delusion, or resistance of mind,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the abandoning of those very bad, unskillful dhammas.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, natthi me tattha cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘On the road by which I entered the village for alms, in the place where I walked for alms, and on the road by which I returned from the village after alms, there was not in me, there, regarding forms [rūpesu] cognizable by the eye, any desire, lust, hatred, delusion, or resistance of mind,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi nu kho me tattha sotaviññeyyesu saddesu …pe…

‘On the road by which I entered the village for alms, in the place where I walked for alms, and on the road by which I returned from the village after alms, was there in me, there, regarding sounds cognizable by the ear …

ghānaviññeyyesu gandhesu …

regarding odors cognizable by the nose …

jivhāviññeyyesu rasesu …

regarding tastes cognizable by the tongue …

kāyaviññeyyesu phoṭṭhabbesu …

regarding tangibles cognizable by the body …

manoviññeyyesu dhammesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti?

regarding dhammas cognizable by the mind, any desire, lust, hatred, delusion, or resistance of mind?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi me tattha manoviññeyyesu dhammesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘On the road by which I entered the village for alms, in the place where I walked for alms, and on the road by which I returned from the village after alms, there was in me, there, regarding dhammas cognizable by the mind, desire, lust, hatred, delusion, or resistance of mind,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the abandoning of those very bad, unskillful dhammas.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, natthi me tattha manoviññeyyesu dhammesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘On the road by which I entered the village for alms, in the place where I walked for alms, and on the road by which I returned from the village after alms, there was not in me, there, regarding dhammas cognizable by the mind, any desire, lust, hatred, delusion, or resistance of mind,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘pahīnā nu kho me pañca kāmaguṇā’ti?

‘Have the five strands of sensual pleasure been abandoned by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘appahīnā kho me pañca kāmaguṇā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā pañcannaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The five strands of sensual pleasure have not been abandoned by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the abandoning of the five strands of sensual pleasure.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘pahīnā kho me pañca kāmaguṇā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The five strands of sensual pleasure have been abandoned by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘pahīnā nu kho me pañca nīvaraṇā’ti?

‘Have the five hindrances been abandoned by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘appahīnā kho me pañca nīvaraṇā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā pañcannaṁ nīvaraṇānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The five hindrances have not been abandoned by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the abandoning of the five hindrances.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘pahīnā kho me pañca nīvaraṇā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The five hindrances have been abandoned by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘pariññātā nu kho me pañcupādānakkhandhā’ti?

‘Have the five aggregates subject to upādāna been fully understood by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘apariññātā kho me pañcupādānakkhandhā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā pañcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ pariññāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The five aggregates subject to upādāna have not been fully understood by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the full understanding of the five aggregates subject to upādāna.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘pariññātā kho me pañcupādānakkhandhā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The five aggregates subject to upādāna have been fully understood by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘bhāvitā nu kho me cattāro satipaṭṭhānā’ti?

‘Have the four satipaṭṭhānas been developed [bhāvitā] by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘abhāvitā kho me cattāro satipaṭṭhānā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The four satipaṭṭhānas have not been developed [abhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the development [bhāvanāya] of the four satipaṭṭhānas.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘bhāvitā kho me cattāro satipaṭṭhānā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The four satipaṭṭhānas have been developed [bhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘bhāvitā nu kho me cattāro sammappadhānā’ti?

‘Have the four right efforts been developed [bhāvitā] by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘abhāvitā kho me cattāro sammappadhānā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā catunnaṁ sammappadhānānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The four right efforts have not been developed [abhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the development [bhāvanāya] of the four right efforts.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘bhāvitā kho me cattāro sammappadhānā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The four right efforts have been developed [bhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘bhāvitā nu kho me cattāro iddhipādā’ti?

‘Have the four bases of spiritual power been developed [bhāvitā] by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘abhāvitā kho me cattāro iddhipādā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The four bases of spiritual power have not been developed [abhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the development [bhāvanāya] of the four bases of spiritual power.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘bhāvitā kho me cattāro iddhipādā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The four bases of spiritual power have been developed [bhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘bhāvitāni nu kho me pañcindriyānī’ti?

‘Have the five indriyas been developed [bhāvitāni] by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘abhāvitāni kho me pañcindriyānī’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā pañcannaṁ indriyānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The five indriyas have not been developed [abhāvitāni] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the development [bhāvanāya] of the five indriyas.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘bhāvitāni kho me pañcindriyānī’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The five indriyas have been developed [bhāvitāni] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘bhāvitāni nu kho me pañca balānī’ti?

‘Have the five balas been developed [bhāvitāni] by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘abhāvitāni kho me pañca balānī’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā pañcannaṁ balānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The five balas have not been developed [abhāvitāni] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the development [bhāvanāya] of the five balas.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘bhāvitāni kho me pañca balānī’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The five balas have been developed [bhāvitāni] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘bhāvitā nu kho me satta bojjhaṅgā’ti?

‘Have the seven bojjhaṅgas been developed [bhāvitā] by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘abhāvitā kho me satta bojjhaṅgā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The seven bojjhaṅgas have not been developed [abhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the development [bhāvanāya] of the seven bojjhaṅgas.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘bhāvitā kho me satta bojjhaṅgā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The seven bojjhaṅgas have been developed [bhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘bhāvito nu kho me ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo’ti?

‘Has the noble eightfold path been developed [bhāvito] by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘abhāvito kho me ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā ariyassa aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘The noble eightfold path has not been developed [abhāvito] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the development [bhāvanāya] of the noble eightfold path.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘bhāvito kho me ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘The noble eightfold path has been developed [bhāvito] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘bhāvitā nu kho me samatho ca vipassanā cā’ti?

‘Have settling [samatho] and vipassanā been developed [bhāvitā] by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘abhāvitā kho me samatho ca vipassanā cā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā samathavipassanānaṁ bhāvanāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘Settling [samatho] and vipassanā have not been developed [abhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the development [bhāvanāya] of settling and vipassanā.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘bhāvitā kho me samatho ca vipassanā cā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘Settling [samatho] and vipassanā have been developed [bhāvitā] by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should reflect thus:

‘sacchikatā nu kho me vijjā ca vimutti cā’ti?

‘Have knowledge and liberation been realized by me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

If, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘asacchikatā kho me vijjā ca vimutti cā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā vijjāya vimuttiyā sacchikiriyāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

‘Knowledge and liberation have not been realized by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should strive for the realization of knowledge and liberation.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti:

But if, Sāriputta, while reviewing, a bhikkhu knows thus:

‘sacchikatā kho me vijjā ca vimutti cā’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

‘Knowledge and liberation have been realized by me,’ then, Sāriputta, that bhikkhu should dwell with that very pīti and gladness, training day and night in skillful dhammas.

Ye hi keci, sāriputta, atītamaddhānaṁ samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhesuṁ, sabbe te evameva paccavekkhitvā paccavekkhitvā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhesuṁ.

For whatever ascetics or brahmins in the past purified almsfood, all of them purified almsfood in just this way, having reviewed and reviewed.

Yepi hi keci, sāriputta, anāgatamaddhānaṁ samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhessanti, sabbe te evameva paccavekkhitvā paccavekkhitvā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhessanti.

And whatever ascetics or brahmins in the future will purify almsfood, all of them will purify almsfood in just this way, having reviewed and reviewed.

Yepi hi keci, sāriputta, etarahi samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhenti, sabbe te evameva paccavekkhitvā paccavekkhitvā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhenti.

And whatever ascetics or brahmins at present purify almsfood, all of them purify almsfood in just this way, having reviewed and reviewed.

Tasmātiha, sāriputta, ‘paccavekkhitvā paccavekkhitvā piṇḍapātaṁ parisodhessāmā’ti—

Therefore, Sāriputta, you should train thus: ‘Having reviewed and reviewed, we will purify almsfood’—

evañhi vo, sāriputta, sikkhitabban”ti.

for thus, Sāriputta, should you train.”

The Bhagavā said this.

Attamano āyasmā sāriputto bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandīti.

Satisfied, Venerable Sāriputta delighted in the Bhagavā's statement.

Piṇḍapātapārisuddhisuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ navamaṁ.
