The Connected Discourses 12.1
Paṭiccasamuppāda
Thus have I heard—
at one time the Bhagavā was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s park.
There the Bhagavā addressed the bhikkhus:
“Bhikkhus.”
“Venerable sir,” those bhikkhus replied to the Bhagavā.
The Bhagavā said this:
“I will teach you paṭiccasamuppāda, bhikkhus.
Listen to that, attend carefully, I will speak.”
“Yes, bhante,” those bhikkhus replied to the Bhagavā.
The Bhagavā said this:
“And what, bhikkhus, is paṭiccasamuppāda?
With ignorance as condition, bhikkhus, there are saṅkhāras;
with saṅkhāras as condition, viññāṇa;
with viññāṇa as condition, nāmarūpa;
with nāmarūpa as condition, the dimension of the six senses [saḷāyatanaṁ];
with the dimension of the six senses [saḷāyatana] as condition, contact;
with contact as condition, vedanā;
with vedanā as condition, taṇhā;
with taṇhā as condition, upādāna;
with upādāna as condition, bhava;
with bhava as condition, birth;
with birth as condition, aging-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, dukkha, dejection, and despair come to be.
Thus is the arising of this whole mass of dukkha.
This is called paṭiccasamuppāda, bhikkhus.
But with the complete fading away and cessation of ignorance, there is the cessation of saṅkhāras;
with the cessation of saṅkhāras, the cessation of viññāṇa;
with the cessation of viññāṇa, the cessation of nāmarūpa;
with the cessation of nāmarūpa, the cessation of the dimension of the six senses [saḷāyatana];
with the cessation of the dimension of the six senses [saḷāyatana], the cessation of contact;
with the cessation of contact, the cessation of vedanā;
with the cessation of vedanā, the cessation of taṇhā;
with the cessation of taṇhā, the cessation of upādāna;
with the cessation of upādāna, the cessation of bhava;
with the cessation of bhava, the cessation of birth;
with the cessation of birth, aging-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, dukkha, dejection, and despair cease.
Thus is the cessation of this whole mass of dukkha.”
This is what the Bhagavā said.
Satisfied, those bhikkhus delighted in the Bhagavā’s statement.
The first.
