Sālasutta

At Sālā

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu viharati sālāya brāhmaṇagāme.

At one time, the Bhagavā was dwelling among the Kosalans, at Sālā, a brahmin village.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi …pe… etadavoca:

There the Bhagavā addressed the bhikkhus … and said:

“Ye te, bhikkhave, bhikkhū navā acirapabbajitā adhunāgatā imaṁ dhammavinayaṁ, te vo, bhikkhave, bhikkhū catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ bhāvanāya samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiṭṭhāpetabbā.

“Those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, who are new, recently gone forth, newly arrived in this dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayaṁ] — those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, should be encouraged, settled, and established in the development of the four satipaṭṭhānas.

Katamesaṁ catunnaṁ?

Which four?

Etha tumhe, āvuso, kāye kāyānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, kāyassa yathābhūtaṁ ñāṇāya;

Come, friends, dwell contemplating body in body, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], for knowledge of body as it truly is;

vedanāsu vedanānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, vedanānaṁ yathābhūtaṁ ñāṇāya;

dwell contemplating vedanā in vedanā, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], for knowledge of vedanā as they truly are;

citte cittānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, cittassa yathābhūtaṁ ñāṇāya;

dwell contemplating citta in citta, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], for knowledge of citta as it truly is;

dhammesu dhammānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, dhammānaṁ yathābhūtaṁ ñāṇāya.

dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], for knowledge of dhammas as they truly are.

Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhikkhū sekhā appattamānasā anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ patthayamānā viharanti, tepi kāye kāyānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, kāyassa pariññāya;

Those bhikkhus too, bhikkhus, who are trainees, who have not yet attained their heart’s desire, dwelling aspiring to the unsurpassed security from bondage — they too dwell contemplating body in body, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], for the full understanding of body;

vedanāsu vedanānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, vedanānaṁ pariññāya;

they dwell contemplating vedanā in vedanā, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], for the full understanding of vedanā;

citte cittānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, cittassa pariññāya;

they dwell contemplating citta in citta, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], for the full understanding of citta;

dhammesu dhammānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, dhammānaṁ pariññāya.

they dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], for the full understanding of dhammas.

Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhikkhū arahanto khīṇāsavā vusitavanto katakaraṇīyā ohitabhārā anuppattasadatthā parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojanā sammadaññāvimuttā, tepi kāye kāyānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, kāyena visaṁyuttā;

Those bhikkhus too, bhikkhus, who are arahants, with āsavas destroyed [khīṇāsavā], who have lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached their own goal, with the fetters of bhava entirely destroyed, completely liberated through final knowledge — they too dwell contemplating body in body, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], detached from body;

vedanāsu vedanānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, vedanāhi visaṁyuttā;

they dwell contemplating vedanā in vedanā, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], detached from vedanā;

citte cittānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, cittena visaṁyuttā;

they dwell contemplating citta in citta, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], detached from citta;

dhammesu dhammānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, dhammehi visaṁyuttā.

they dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending [sampajānā], unified [ekodibhūtā], with citta serene [vippasannacittā], endowed with samādhi [samāhitā], with citta in ekaggatā [ekaggacittā], detached from dhammas.
