Udāna 3.1
Born of the Result of Kamma
Thus I heard—
at one time, the Bhagavā was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park.
Now at that time a certain bhikkhu was sitting not far from the Bhagavā, folding his legs crosswise, setting his body upright, enduring a vedanā that was dukkha, born of the result of old kamma, intense, harsh, and bitter, with sati, clearly comprehending [sampajāno], untroubled.
The Bhagavā saw that bhikkhu sitting not far away, folding his legs crosswise, setting his body upright, enduring a vedanā that was dukkha, born of the result of old kamma, intense, harsh, and bitter, with sati, clearly comprehending [sampajānaṁ], untroubled.
Then the Bhagavā, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance:
“For the bhikkhu who has abandoned all kamma,
shaking off the dust done before;
for one without anything of ‘mine,’ standing steady, such-like,
there is no purpose in speaking to people.”
The first.
