Inspired Utterances 8.1
The First Connected with nibbāna
Thus have I heard—
at one time, the Bhagavā was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park.
Now at that time, the Bhagavā was instructing, encouraging, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a dhamma talk connected with nibbāna.
And those bhikkhus, having made it their purpose, paying attention, gathering their whole mind, with ears intent, listen to the dhamma.
Then the Bhagavā, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance:
“There is, bhikkhus, that dimension [tadāyatanaṁ], where there is neither earth, nor water, nor fire, nor air; neither the dimension of infinite space [ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ], nor the dimension of infinite viññāṇa [viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ], nor the dimension of nothingness [ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ], nor the dimension of neither-saññā-nor-non-saññā [nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ]; neither this world, nor the other world, nor both moon and sun.
There too, bhikkhus, I speak of neither coming, nor going, nor standing, nor passing away, nor reappearing;
this is without support, without proceeding, without an object.
This is the end of dukkha.”
The first.
