The Udāna 8.3
The Third Connected with nibbāna
Thus have I heard—
at one time the Bhagavā was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s park.
Now at that time the Bhagavā was instructing, encouraging, rousing, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a dhamma talk connected with nibbāna.
And those bhikkhus, having made it important, having given attention to it, having gathered their whole mind, with ears inclined, were listening to the dhamma.
Then the Bhagavā, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance:
“There is, bhikkhus, the unborn, the unbecome, the unmade, the asaṅkhata.
If, bhikkhus, this unborn, unbecome, unmade, asaṅkhata did not exist, no escape from the born, the become, the made, the saṅkhata would be discerned here.
But because, bhikkhus, there is the unborn, the unbecome, the unmade, the asaṅkhata, therefore an escape from the born, the become, the made, the saṅkhata is discerned.”
The third.
