- Do not let later commentarial literature (e.g. the Visuddhimagga and the aṭṭhakathā) override the plain meaning of the early suttas. **This is an "Early Buddhism First" endeavour**. Where a sutta is ambiguous, prefer the reading that stands on its own without commentarial support.
- Translation consistency is more important than stylistic variation. Once a Pāli term has been rendered in a particular way, continue using that rendering throughout the text unless the context clearly requires otherwise.
- Do not explain, clarify, or unpack doctrinal implications unless they are explicitly present in the Pāli. Translate what is said, not what later tradition or modern scholarship believes is meant.
- When a stock formula recurs, translate it identically unless there is a clear grammatical reason not to.
- Return only valid JSON with same segment ids, same segment order, and translated text strings. Do not add notes or commentary.

#### Nikāya and sutta titles

### Caveats

When a Pāli compound contains an untranslated root term, translate the grammatical/relational parts into English while keeping the root term in Pāli. Prefer natural English prepositions ("with", "of", "in", "from") except when heavier constructions like "endowed with" are fluid and beautiful. When the compound is a dvanda (pair), split it into its components joined by "and". Always add the original Pāli in square brackets so that the reader can trace the Pāli back. Some examples:

- citassa ekaggatā -> oneness of mind [*citassa ekaggatā*]
